It Europe's last remaining divided city and the Green Line that divides Turkish and Cypriot sectors is now a tourist attraction. To get a real flavour of this fascinating city buy a map and walk through the squares and winding streets. On foot you can appreciate the old original City bounded by miles of 400 year old walls as it stands in contrast against the glass and steel of a busy modern City, Elefthesia Square is a good example of the ancient stone capital originating from the Bronze Age sitting adjacent to the shining new Nicosia. |

Your route around Nicosia can include visits to the Nicosia Jewels Museum, or the Arts Centre and Cyprus Museum where Cypriot antiquities from the Neolithic Age to the Roman Period are on display. To step back into present time call in at the State Collection of Modern Art for a look at Cyprus’ contemporary art scene. Any walk through the city will take you past the many shops selling quality handicrafts, embroidery and pottery made by local artisans. As well as fashionable boutiques for those with on the look out for something out of the ordinary to add to their wardrobe. Nicosia is brimming with interesting historical buildings and churches that you can wander round to admire the architecture and enjoy the shade for a while.
