Northern Cyprus enjoys approximately 300 day of sunshine annually. The climate is mild. In Spring and Autumn temperatures average at 20C with very little rain fall. It is hottest in July and August when temperatures can reach mid 30C. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was created in 1983 after the division of the island of Cyprus into Turkish Cypriot North and Greek Cypriot South after many years of inter communal strife.

In recent years, border controls have been eased between the two communities. Northern Cyprus has a population of 264,172 and is one of the least populated regions in the Mediterranean. The national language is Turkish but English is widely used and understood. The national currency is the Turkish Lira. Nicosia (Lefkosa) is the capital city with a population of 150,000. Tourism is a major factor in the economy with agriculture also playing a key role.

The airport at Ercan has been redeveloped into a modern transport hub with regular scheduled international flights.

Farmagusia is the principle port for cargo and also has a free trade zone in its outer harbour. The port of Kyrenia is mainly used for international ferry passengers. Regular connections are made to southern ports of Turkey and less frequently to Israel and Syria.

Northern Cyprus has 46 sandy beaches that are the nesting grounds for Chelonia-Mydas and Caretta-Caretta sea turtles. The Republic has one of the the longest diving seasons in the Mediterranean, with crystal clear unpolluted waters there is often visibility of up to 30m.

Cyprus is on one of the main migration routes for birds between Eastern Europe and Africa. Approximately 300 species and millions of birds will visit during the Spring and Summer. These include Flamingos, Griffin Vultures and the Golden Oriole.
